BIG PIX

Temporary installation developed with Meg Saligman, located just outside the Republican National Convention, in cleveland, Ohio, July 2016. Comprised of ten, 18ft high pylons, including catcher nets, each was fitted with spring loaded ball launchers. Visitors were invited to put their thoughts about "The Good Life" on chips which were then loaded into balls, and launched up into the catcher nets. The balls were then funnelled to the top of the pylon, where they would fall down, inside, forming a pile of thoughts.

VIDEO

Jazz pianist and composer, Chris Walters, commissioned this device to augment his forrays into new musical territories.
The machine has 8 different voices, consising of 2 metal pipes, a bass piano string, a piece of steel hardware, an aluminum angle, tamborine cymbals, a spring "Boing," and a scratchy noise-maker. Powered by a near-silent gearmotor, the player is able to adjust tempo. The instrument voices are percussed by a variety of interchangeable timing cams. And, which sounds are active is set by stop levers, thereby accomodating a huge variety of possibilities, for both composition purposes, as well as live performances.

Financial Consultant, Ashok Rajan, thought that an effective way to communicate his own particular business practice values, and strategic mission, would be through the visual metaphors presented by MechaniCards®. Four of the existing designs were augmented with text labeling. And, just in development at the time, "The Clapping Hands" piece was added for extra emphasis.

When Lumigogo's creative director approached me at the 2018 AutomataCon conference, saying he wanted me to design lamps for his new venture, I thought he must be kidding. But, he really meant it, and I gave it some serious thought. "A Slice of Light" is my first entry into this realm. Look for it on the shelf of your favorite fine furniture store, soon. More crazy lamps are coming!
